Dear Mari,
We are sorry to hear about Gigi's disappearance. In order for someone to be on our website, we have to be able to verify that there is an open missing person investigation with a law enforcement agency and usually have a signed consent form from a family member authorizing us to place the photo on our website. Unfortunately, as time goes by sometimes police departments no longer have records dating back that far if the files get lost or sometimes if they haven't had contact with a family member for a long period of time, the missing person case gets closed out. If we are not able to verify that the police department have an open cases, then we would not be able to get Gigi registered here.
Since some attitudes and feelings about the transgendered community have changed so the police department might see the situation in a different light today than they did in the late 70s and possibly take it more seriously. You might want to see if speaking with someone at the police department and explaining the situation about how they originally had a report but it had been discarded over the years. If this still doesn't work, you might want to see if talking to one of the supervisors, like a Sergeant, might see the situation a little differently. If the police department is able to reopen the investigation, then we can try to see if we can get Gigi registered here.
If the police department is not able to reopen the case, let us know that also. Even though our services would be limited in that situation, there are two things that we can do for you: 1. We have a list of resources for other organizations that might be able to assist in Gigi's case and 2. We have a special database for cases where there is no longer/never was an open missing person investigation with a law enforcement agency. Even though we would not be able to distribute Gigi's information, we would be able to keep her information in our database in case a medical examiner, hospital, or another law enforcement agency needs help in identifying an unidentified person such as a John or Jane Doe. In order to send you the forms for our database, we would just need your mailing address, phone number, and to know if Gigi has any disabilities.
If you have any other questions, please let us know. We hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Annie Converse
