Immeasurable Loss

Missing But Never Forgotten

Gigi Diaz abducted in 1979 while staying in San Francisco, California. Gigi frequently traveled back and forth from San Francisco to San Diego, California. At the time of Gigi's disappearance, she was staying in San Francisco at a friends flat, I was introduced to Gigi's friend only once. We met in San Diego, California, I don't recall her name. I remember that Gigi's friend had a Jamaican accent and was very unique and beautiful. According to Gigi's friend Gigi left her flat to go out for a walk and returned a couple hours later disheveled and physically abused. Apparently, Gigi said that she had gotten into a hassle that escalated into a fist fight with a man on the street. Shortly after Gigi had arrived at her friends Gigi left again to go look for this man to confront him. Gigi never returned, that was the last time that anyone who knew Gigi saw her.

The photo I posted was taken of Gigi a few months prior to her disappearance. I believe that Gigi was in her late 20's early 30's when she went missing. This sounds terrible but I never knew Gigi's actual date of birth or age. I was a minor when we first met and a very out and loud young lesbian. Gigi was one of the few people who accepted me, no questions asked. I'm sure that today that seems like nothing, but back then it was a lot, especially to someone who was my age.

Gigi was slender, tall and strikingly beautiful. She was always very well dressed and never went anywhere without her, medications and self prescribed pharmaceuticals (Black Beauties and Quaaludes). She did not adorn herself with a lot of make-up or jewelry. She smoked Gitanes or Cloves. She carried an authentic Louis Vuitton monogram tote bag and a leather backgammon set. She loved to play backgammon. During the day she liked to dress casual, often wearing designer jeans, a simple white blouse and open toe shoes. She went to the beauty salon at least twice a month for a manicure and pedicure. Her hair was a dark auburn, styled to the shoulder. She had light brown eyes, olive skin with a very good complexion. Gigi was not a boisterous woman but she was not meek either. She had a diplomatic way about her, but if someone tried to get physical with her she wouldn't hesitate to defend herself. She had a very entertaining personality and a good sense of humor. She was sensitive to others, especially the homeless and she was very generous. She could move in and out of many circles with poise and grace. Both men and woman found her extremely attractive and intriguing. She's the only woman that I have ever known that could run in stilettos. She adored classic films and things from the Art Deco period. She loved to listen to David Bowie and The Rolling Stones. Everywhere she went she was treated like a VIP. At night she enjoyed going out to a gay disco or club. She adored China Town and Pacific Heights. In San Diego she spent a lot of her time in La Jolla, Mission Hills or Sunset Cliffs. Gigi had a very loving relationship with her mom and close friends. Everyone who knew her dearly missed her. At the time of her disappearance, the San Francisco Police Department did very little to assist her mom and friends in their search for Gigi. I spoke with the San Francisco Police, directly, when Gigi disappeared, they were offensive and callous. They indulged in cruel and insensitive jokes about Gigi's transgender. They did not seem interested in pursuing her case and they did not give any importance to her disappearance. Nor did they consider abduction as the cause and reason for Gigi's disappearance. The San Francisco Police that I spoke with had this opinion, "One less queer." It was the end of the 1970's and this was typical of the time. Gigi was close to the last stages of transitioning when she was abducted.

In 2003 I contacted the San Francisco Police Department in hopes of obtaining a copy of Gigi's file. I was told that her file had been discarded, thrown out, I was shocked to hear this. I thought that Gigi's case would have been transferred to cold case files or unsolved cases, but not thrown out. Unfortunately, my own records and photographs were stolen from me in 1986-87. Regrettably, I also lost contact with Gigi's mom. Our best friends Paula, Joey and Steve are now deceased. I have no other resources available that I can use to gather any information about Gigi and what actually took place the day she disappeared. I am able to hold onto hope of someday finding something out about what really happened to Gigi.

I dare not think what you suffered at the hands of your abductor. I pray you realized that this was to be your last flight. That you closed your eyes and heart and surrendered yourself unto death. Gigi, my dearest friend, lover and partner, the part of me that belonged to you is yours to this day. Thoughts of you fill my eyes with tears and makes my heart feel as if there is a millstone tied around it. How I still long to feel the tips of your red nails cascade like cool water on my pale skin.

Unbelievable

Tonight I read a web page called, ‘The Killing Fields’. It is about the deaths that have been taking place on a stretch of highway from Louisiana to Texas. It made me think about you, Gigi… so I came here in honor of the memories, the searches, the pain, the tears, for all the persons that have been abducted, murdered. Loved ones that have been cast off into fields, rivers, and streams over a period of time that seems so ridiculous to me. Its ludicrous that abduction, kidnapping and murder is now seemingly the norm no matter how violent or brutal the act it has spread world wide to such astounding frightful numbers. It is so difficult to go to sites over and over again to view horrific details and photographs of victims. I do it in hopes of finding you Gigi, you deserve at least that much from me. I might be the only person making an effort to keep Gigi and her disappearance in public view. I was not ever able to obtain any information about Gigi’s family. I apologize for my short absence from you Gigi through this page, at present my own life is upside down. I keep myself in constant though and prayer for you, my faith keeps me strong. God bless you, one and all. Cherish each other and always take care of your love.

No Word From Governor Swartzenager.

I expected to hear from Arnold long before this. Not even a note saying, sorry I cant be of any help. I dont know why Im surprised really, this seems to be typical for our times. Its easier to find a lost or strey dog then it is a human being that is missing and has been abducted. I mean come on do you really believe that people who are not found just dissapear, of course not. Someone out there somewhere knows exactly what happened to Gigi. Im putting this out there for you. Please, help me.

Dear Gov. Swartzenager

Although I currently reside in Medford, Oregon I still consider myself a native Californian. I only moved here to be near my mother in her elder years. I am writing to you because I just dont know where else to turn. You may not be able to help me, but I wont know unless I ask. A dear friend of mine was abducted in 1978-79 while she was in San Francisco, California. Her given name is Gigi Diaz and she is still missing to this day. Her birth name (I believe) was Eugene Diaz, Gigi is transgender (incomplete) male to female. Her case file was discarded, thrown out several years ago, per S.F. policy. Because of this there is no way of getting Gigi on any of the missing persons sites available today. I know that Gigi was arrested in La Jolla, California sometime in 1977-78 before she disappeared. I just want to try to locate her family so that they can get her case reopened. I am not a family member and therefore I can not do it. I have never forgotten Gigi but lately she has been in my thoughts everyday. I couldnt say why. I thought that if there was a criminal record that there might be information about Gigi or her family, a link of some kind so that I can contact a sibling or parent. I hope that you can help me. If not, thank you for your time. You can visit a site that I have dedicated to Gigi at:
www.spaceshiprodeo.blogspot.com .
I was also hoping that you could look into S.F. policy for discarding records on missing persons after 10 years. I would think that someone in any one of their vast departments would know how to use a computer and download files to disk or CDR. So that missing persons files would not have to be thrown out like trash because they dont have the room to store them. Thanks to their policy there is no record that a missing persons report was ever even made on behalf of Gigi after she disappeared. The S.F. missing persons department just wiped her off the face of the earth just like her abductor. The saying that, eventually everyone gets brought to justice, is definitely not true for Gigi. Whoevers hands that Gigi suffered her abduction and God only knows what else that I dare not think about. Not only got away with what they did but never have to worry about being brought to justice. Gigis abductor has the San Francisco missing persons department to thank for that. My hurt and anger is showing so Ill stop here. Thank you again.
Sincerely,
Mari Thompson

Dear Mari,

Thank you for the update. Unfortunately, since the San Francisco police department cannot reopen the investigation, our services are limited. However, attached are forms so we can try to include Gigi's information in our database so that if a law enforcement agency needs assistance trying to identify an unidentified person, we will be able to check our missing person records. Some versions of Adobe do not save documents so you may need to print them out before you send them to us in case it doesn't save.

If the San Diego police department is able to open an investigation for Gigi, let us know right away so we can try to officially get her registered here (if they cannot assist also, the attached forms would still apply). Additionally, we have a brochure with a few additional organizations that may be able to assist and I will send that to you shortly. If you have any questions once you receive these forms, please let us know.

Dear Mari,
Congratulations to you and Kathleen--I wish the best for you and your growing family. Whether or not the police department is able to open a missing person for Gigi, please let us know so that way we know what we can do to assist.

National Center For Missing Adults

Dear Mari,

We are sorry to hear about Gigi's disappearance. In order for someone to be on our website, we have to be able to verify that there is an open missing person investigation with a law enforcement agency and usually have a signed consent form from a family member authorizing us to place the photo on our website. Unfortunately, as time goes by sometimes police departments no longer have records dating back that far if the files get lost or sometimes if they haven't had contact with a family member for a long period of time, the missing person case gets closed out. If we are not able to verify that the police department have an open cases, then we would not be able to get Gigi registered here.

Since some attitudes and feelings about the transgendered community have changed so the police department might see the situation in a different light today than they did in the late 70s and possibly take it more seriously. You might want to see if speaking with someone at the police department and explaining the situation about how they originally had a report but it had been discarded over the years. If this still doesn't work, you might want to see if talking to one of the supervisors, like a Sergeant, might see the situation a little differently. If the police department is able to reopen the investigation, then we can try to see if we can get Gigi registered here.

If the police department is not able to reopen the case, let us know that also. Even though our services would be limited in that situation, there are two things that we can do for you: 1. We have a list of resources for other organizations that might be able to assist in Gigi's case and 2. We have a special database for cases where there is no longer/never was an open missing person investigation with a law enforcement agency. Even though we would not be able to distribute Gigi's information, we would be able to keep her information in our database in case a medical examiner, hospital, or another law enforcement agency needs help in identifying an unidentified person such as a John or Jane Doe. In order to send you the forms for our database, we would just need your mailing address, phone number, and to know if Gigi has any disabilities.

If you have any other questions, please let us know. We hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,
Annie Converse

No Word

From the mayor of San Francisco or the presidents office. This week I will be writing Gov. Swartzenager. I will also be calling the San Diego, California police department in an effort to locate information about Gigi from an old record. I am hoping to obtain Gigi's actual birth date and birth name. Perhaps there could also be a record about her mom, dad or siblings. I know it's a desperate reach, but one never knows where a lead will come from, so I keep praying, hoping and trying.

Still No Word

I was overcome with heartache and pain after speaking with Paula. I spent days in bed grieving and contemplating the thought of your absence from our lives. It was too much to bare, it was to be our immmeasurable loss. When I first found out that you had gone missing, somehow I knew that we would never hear from you again. Paula and I just cried and cried.

Sweet Sweet Angel

Thank You

I wrote Attorney General, Bill Lockyer yesterday. As promised, I am posting all responses and or correspondence. I received this response in less then 24 hours of my submission to Bill Lockyer. I want to thank Mr. Lockyer and Joe Wright for all their assistance, efficiency and especially for responding so quickly. Thank you, your efforts are greatly appreciated.

San Francisco Police Missing Persons

Inspector Martin did get back to me today and I do appreciate that she did. She said that she searched through the computer and nothing turned up. Martin basically stated that she could not help me any further and then referred me to Karen in another department. Some place that stores hard files. Martin did say that the file could have been discarded because Gigi had been found but had requested that her mom and friends not be notified as to her whereabouts.

As you could imagine, I guaranteed Martin that this would not have been the case, not with Gigi. Martin then asked me how I would know this and what my relationship to Gigi was. To which I said, I had once been involved with Gigi and that we were always very close friends. But that even if Gigi and I were strangers, once I had heard of Gigi and what happened to her, I would still be making the same inquires about Gigi. I don't think she believed me, not that I care. Karen basically repeated to me what Martin had said. Which was, after ten years if a missing persons case is not solved the San Francisco Police Department throws away the case file because they don't have room to keep files past ten years. The only files that are kept are criminal files. To which I responded with, so a person who is abducted and goes missing isn't worth making space for? So that there can be some kind of proof that the person reported missing is still missing. Or so that there is proof that a missing persons report was filed so that one can follow the progression of the case. To be fair here, Karen did say that she does not make the policy and that she does not agree with it. That she was sorry, but there was nothing more that she could do or that she could help me with. I then said, that if President Bush's daughter went missing and the case was not solved after ten years, that I could guarantee that the case file would not be purged, Karen agreed saying, of course because she's the presidents daughter.

We went in a few circles and finally I just said thank you and good-bye. I wrote President Bush at the white house and the Mayor of San Francisco. I will post their response once its received.

Missing Persons

I spoke with Inspector Martin today at San Francisco Missing Persons. She said that she would at least look up Gigi in the computer system and get back to me. Inspector Martin did confirm what I had been told before by the San Francisco Police. That after so many years files are thrown away? I just can't grasp this, can you.. someone please help me understand! I mean if one of President Bush's daughters is abducted or goes missing and years pass and the case is not solved, do you think that that case file would be thrown out like trash. My God, the only proof that there was as to what happened to Gigi or that she was reported missing, existed in that case file. I am setting myself on a course that will not end until someone can tell me something about what happened to Gigi and why the San Francisco Police Department and Missing Persons Department think that they have the right to add insult after insult to pain and suffering by devaluing Gigi's very existence and life by throwing out her case file.

Please Sincere Comments Only

Thank you for viewing this site. Its a slow start but hopefully this site will receive the attention it needs so that someone out there who knows something will eventually respond with information that will help me find out something about what really happened to Gigi.
